Who needs registration

The duty usually applies to citizens of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland who plan to stay longer than three months. The application is filed with the voivode competent for the place of residence in Poland.

The ground may be employment, self-employment, studies, or sufficient means plus health insurance. A family member may follow a separate path depending on nationality. If the family member is not an EU citizen, they often need a residence permit or family reunification residence permit.

Documents depend on the ground

• employment — proof of work or a written employer confirmation;
• business — evidence of registered and real activity;
• studies — university confirmation, insurance and means;
• other cases — health insurance and proof of sufficient resources.

You also need a valid ID document, the application form and photos if required. Foreign papers are checked for translation needs. After registration many people also obtain PESEL for work, tax and banking.

EU registration vs residence card: which path to use

EU citizens use residence registration. Non-EU nationals use a residence card. Mixed families often need both tracks in one household: you register, your partner applies for a residence permit. Do not file a TRC “just in case” if you are an EU citizen — the office expects the correct procedure.

After registration, close PESEL and address data so employment, social security and banking are not blocked by formalities.

What offices usually ask for

Most often: proof of the ground (job/business/studies), insurance and means. For self-employment, CEIDG/KRS data should match the application narrative. For employment, employer details must be current. Check official guidance on UDSC and in MOS.
